TSYS. Certified faster. Same certification problem, same discipline required, this time on one of the largest acquiring processors in the industry.

Who TSYS is

TSYS (Total System Services) has been a major U.S. payments processor for decades, known for supporting acquirers, ISVs, and merchants across issuing, merchant, and consumer segments. Since 2019, TSYS has operated under Global Payments, following the companies' $21.5 billion merger of equals, giving TSYS the backing of one of the largest payments technology companies in the world while it continues to run its own acquiring platforms and developer certification programs. TSYS is one of the largest third-party processors for U.S. banks, and its certification programs are the gateway a huge share of retail, restaurant, and hospitality software has to pass through before going live.

The platforms behind the certification

TSYS runs certification through a few distinct platforms, and which one you're building against changes the scope of the work:

Sierra → TSYS's terminal-based EMV platform, the one most POS and PIN pad certifications run through. Sierra certifications typically cover credit, debit, EBT, and gift transactions, contact and contactless EMV, and partial authorizations, and they're documented against verticals like retail, restaurant, and hotel/lodging.

Summit → TSYS's host-based processing gateway (Summit Gateway), built for high-speed, host-based transaction processing with automated batch close and settlement. Summit was built specifically to bring host-based advantages, like partial authorizations for gift and prepaid cards, to retail and table-service restaurant merchants.

TransIT → the TSYS Acquiring Processor connection used heavily in hospitality and property management integrations, including systems like Oracle Hospitality, where a property's PMS needs a direct, authenticated line to the TSYS host for card authorizations.

Three platforms, three different certification footprints, even when the underlying processor is the same.

Verticals where this shows up most

TSYS certification work concentrates heavily in a few industries:

Retail → standard card-present EMV, contactless, and gift card acceptance at the POS.

Restaurant and QSR → tip adjustment, tip-at-time-of-sale, quick chip, and table-service specific transaction flows.

Hotel and lodging → PMS-integrated authorizations, often running through TransIT, where the certification has to account for folio holds, incremental authorizations, and check-in/check-out timing.

Where Level 3 fits in

Level 1 → the physical chip reader and electrical interface, owned by the hardware manufacturer.
Level 2 → the EMV kernel talking to the chip, pre-certified at the device level.
Level 3 → the full payment application, integrated end to end with the specific TSYS platform and the card brands. A Sierra certification doesn't transfer to Summit, and a Summit certification doesn't transfer to TransIT, even for the same application.

Examples across device platforms

PAX and Ingenico terminals → common across Sierra-certified retail and restaurant builds.

ID TECH and Verifone readers → frequently seen in semi-integrated Sierra and Tetra-based certifications.

Sunmi and other Android smart terminals → increasingly common in unattended and quick-service environments.

Where Paying.co fits in

We've delivered 130+ EMV Level 3 certifications, and TSYS is one of the processors our team works against constantly. Our EMV Level 3 Certification service runs the full lifecycle in-house, from application build through card brand sign-off, on our own FIME, MV, and ICC tooling. Our team works side by side with TSYS's own certification group throughout the process, so findings get resolved in real time instead of bouncing back and forth over email for weeks.

For teams that want the process handled without pulling engineers off the roadmap, Managed Certification runs that same process without ever touching your codebase → 70% faster timelines, 50% lower cost, 97% first-pass approval.

If you're certifying against Sierra, Summit, or TransIT, let's talk it through.
