Start with what it's already certified for

Every payment terminal has to be EMV Level 3 certified against a specific processor and card brand combination before it can process a live transaction. That certification is a property of the exact device-and-processor pairing, not something that transfers automatically to a different processor relationship. A terminal can be excellent hardware and still mean a multi-month certification project if it's uncertified for the processor you actually use.

Before comparing anything else — price, form factor, feature list — confirm which processors and acquirers a given model is already certified against. That single check eliminates more genuinely wrong-fit hardware than any other factor on this list.

A hardware vendor selling terminals has a natural incentive to recommend what's in their own inventory — that's not a criticism, it's just the structure of that relationship. A team with no hardware to sell evaluates a device purely against your requirements: processor fit, certification status, and lifecycle, without a competing interest in which specific unit you land on. Neither approach is inherently wrong, but it's worth knowing which one you're dealing with before the recommendation arrives.
